How to work it out
Bars in a ton equals the weight of a ton divided by the weight of one bar. The weight of one bar is the pounds per foot times its length.
Example: a 40 ft #6 bar weighs 40 × 1.502, or 60.08 lb. A short ton holds 2,000 / 60.08, or 33.3 of them. Round down to whole bars when you load a truck, and expect a few percent of difference from the mill weight.
Ton, short ton and tonne
In US trade, a ton is the short ton of 2,000 lb. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, or 2,204.6 lb. Many quotes in the US also use CWT, which is 100 lb. Check the unit on each quote before you compare prices.
The calculator above shows your total in both. Enter a price per lb or per ton to see a material cost.
