Remove duplicates from a list and join it with commas

Paste your column. Repeated values are removed, the first copy stays, and the result is a comma separated list. The count under the output shows how many were removed.

How the duplicate check works

The tool keeps the first copy of each value and drops the later ones. The order of your list stays the same unless you pick a sort. With Ignore case for duplicates on, Blue and blue count as the same value, and the first one you typed stays.

Blank lines and extra spaces are removed before the check. " red" and "red" are therefore the same value.

Read the count

Under the output you see a line such as "3 items from 7 lines. 1 blank removed, 3 duplicates removed." Use it to check the result before you copy. If the number of duplicates surprises you, look at the case and spaces in your data.

When duplicates matter

  • Mailing lists: one address twice means two emails to the same person.
  • SQL IN lists: repeats add length and no value.
  • Keyword and tag fields: some tools reject a list with repeated entries.

Questions about this page

Does it remove duplicates that differ only in case?

Yes, when Ignore case for duplicates is ticked. It is ticked on this page. Untick it if Blue and blue should stay separate values.

Which copy of a duplicate is kept?

The first one. If you sort the list, the sort happens after duplicates are removed.

Can I see which values were duplicates?

The tool shows only the count. To see the repeated values, sort the list A to Z with duplicates left in, and look for neighbors that match.
