Smith, John How to turn a list into rows
Paste the list into the left box. The column appears on the right. The tool finds the separator on its own: comma, semicolon, pipe or tab. If it guesses wrong, pick the separator in the Split on menu.
Press Copy, click the first cell of a column in Excel or Sheets, and paste. Each value lands in its own cell.
What gets cleaned up
- Quotes around values (single, double or backtick) are removed.
- Brackets or parentheses around the whole list are removed.
- A comma inside a quoted value stays in the value. "Smith, John" stays one row.
- Spaces around values are trimmed, and empty items are dropped.
Lists from code and queries
This works well for lists copied from a SQL IN clause, a JSON array or a Python list. Paste the whole thing, brackets included. If you also want to remove duplicates or sort the rows, tick the options below the box.
