This input:

Smith 42
Jones 17

Lee 23

gives this output with the settings on this page:

Smith,Jones,Lee

Copy from Excel in three steps

Select the cells in your sheet and press Ctrl+C. Click the left box here and press Ctrl+V. The comma separated list appears on the right. On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl.

Excel puts a tab between columns and a line break between rows. If you select two or three columns by accident, the tool keeps only the first one, which is what most people want. You can turn this off under Options.

Excel formula or this tool?

In Excel 2019 and later, =TEXTJOIN(",", TRUE, A1:A100) joins a range with commas and skips blank cells. It needs a cell to hold the result, and it cannot add quotes, remove duplicates or sort without more formulas.

This tool needs no formula and does not change your workbook. It also works with older Excel versions that do not have TEXTJOIN.

Tidy results from messy sheets

  • Trim spaces is on, so cells with trailing spaces do not break lookups later.
  • Remove blank lines is on, so a gap in the column does not leave a double comma.
  • Numbers keep their form. Excel dates paste as the text you see, so format the cells as you want them before you copy.

Questions about this page

Why does my list have a tab in it?

You copied more than one column. Tick Use only the first column in Options, or copy a single column. The note under the output tells you when this happens.

Can I add quotes around each value?

Yes. Pick Single or Double in the Quotes menu. Single quotes suit SQL, and double quotes suit CSV.

Does it work with a column of more than 100,000 rows?

Yes. A list of 100,000 rows converts in under a second. Excel itself holds up to 1,048,576 rows.
