How to load 225 lb

A 225 lb barbell is two 45 lb plates on each side of a 45 lb bar. Lifters call it "two plates", and it is a big milestone on the bench press.

  1. Subtract the bar. 225 lb minus 45 lb is 180 lb.
  2. Divide by 2. Each side carries 90 lb.
  3. Load two 45 lb plates on each side. Put the heaviest plate against the shoulder of the bar.
  4. Add a collar to each sleeve and check that both sides look the same.

The number of reps a person can do with 225 lb is a common strength test. For squats and deadlifts it is a common mid-level working weight.
