Print a banner on multiple pages

A banner is a poster that is one page tall. Use it for birthdays, welcome signs, team names and classroom headers. You print one sheet for each section and join them in a row.

On landscape Letter paper with a 0.25 inch margin, one page shows 8 inches of height. A 48 x 8 inch banner takes 5 sheets, and a 36 x 8 inch banner takes 4. The tool is set to a height of 8 inches on landscape Letter. Add a wide picture and it builds a single row.

Most home printers cannot print within 0.25 in (6 mm) of the edge. The overlap is the strip you glue.

Make a banner image

Create a very wide picture, for example 4800 x 800 pixels, in any design app. Put the words at least 1 inch from the top and bottom so they stay inside the printable area. Export as PNG or JPG.

Letters that stay in one piece

Seams cut across letters. Leave a gap between words and try to put the seams in the gaps. The preview shows where every seam falls, so you can nudge the poster width until a seam lands between words.

Hanging a banner

  • Glue the sheets to a strip of ribbon or kraft paper so the banner does not sag.
  • Use painter's tape or removable hooks on the wall.
  • For outdoors, laminate the sheets or use a poly sleeve against rain.

Print at actual size

In the print dialog, choose 100% or Actual size. Do not choose Fit to page. That setting shrinks every tile, and the pieces will not line up. Print the test page first and measure it.

Questions

How do I get one row of pages?

Choose the Height setting and enter a value no taller than one page, for example 8 inches on landscape Letter. The tool then builds one row.

How many sheets for a 6 foot banner?

A 72 x 8 inch banner takes 8 landscape Letter sheets with a 0.5 inch overlap. The preview shows the exact count for your picture shape.

Should the picture be wide?

Yes. In Fit mode the tool does not crop. A square picture at 8 inches tall makes a banner only 8 inches wide.
