Print a poster on 9 pages (3 x 3)

A 3 x 3 grid uses nine sheets and gives you a poster you can see from across a room. With Letter paper, a 0.25 inch margin and a 0.5 inch overlap, three sheets across cover 23 inches.

Height depends on your picture. A square picture makes 23 x 23 inches and uses 9 sheets. A 3:4 picture makes 23 x 30.7 inches and takes 12 Letter sheets (3 x 4), or 9 sheets on Legal paper. The tool is set to 3 pages across.

Most home printers cannot print within 0.25 in (6 mm) of the edge. The overlap is the strip you glue.

Square pictures fill 3 x 3

For a Letter poster that is exactly 9 sheets, use a square picture or a picture only slightly taller than wide. A 3:2 landscape picture is only 2 sheets tall, so 3 x 2 gives 6 sheets. A 2:3 portrait is 4 sheets tall, so it needs 12.

Paper choices

On Tabloid paper, three pages across cover 30.5 inches, and a 3:4 picture takes 9 sheets. On Legal paper, 3 pages across cover 23 inches and a 2:3 picture takes 9 sheets. Pick the paper that suits your printer and compare the grid in the preview.

Order of work

  • Print all nine pages in one go so the colors match.
  • Number them on the back if you do not use the page labels.
  • Glue row by row, top row first, and keep the rows straight with a ruler.

Print at actual size

In the print dialog, choose 100% or Actual size. Do not choose Fit to page. That setting shrinks every tile, and the pieces will not line up. Print the test page first and measure it.

Questions

How big is a poster on 9 Letter sheets?

About 23 inches (58 cm) wide. A square picture makes it 23 inches tall, and a 3:4 picture makes it 30.7 inches tall (12 Letter sheets, or 9 on Legal or Tabloid).

How do I get exactly 3 x 3?

Crop your picture to a square first, or choose a Height that gives three rows. The tool shows sheets and size at once, so you can try values.

Should I print double-sided?

No. Print one side. Page labels and marks are on the front.
