About

Treadmill Pace Converter turns a treadmill speed into a running pace, and a pace into the speed to set on the belt. It works in miles and kilometers: mph, km/h, minutes per mile and minutes per kilometer.

What it does

You type a speed or a pace. The other value updates as you type. You also get the nearest speed a treadmill can really hold (most step by 0.1), finish times for a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon, and an estimate of the flat-ground pace that matches a treadmill incline.

How it works

Speed and pace are two ways to say the same thing, so the math is exact: pace in minutes equals 60 divided by speed. One mile is 1.609344 kilometers. The incline estimate uses the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) running equation. It is an estimate for steady running above 5 mph, not a measurement of your effort. Full citations are in the Sources list.

The converter runs in your browser and does not send what you type. We do not ask you to create an account. Your last settings stay on your device.

A note on training

This tool helps with arithmetic. It is not medical advice. Check your treadmill's own display, because belts can read a little fast or slow. Talk to a doctor before you start a hard training plan if you have a health concern.
