Rolling offset diagram A box with rise, roll and run as its edges. The true offset crosses the rise and roll face. The travel crosses the whole box.
Not to scale. Dots are the pipe center lines at each fitting. Travel is the long diagonal through the box.

Formulas: true offset = √(rise² + roll²), travel = true offset ÷ sin(angle), run = true offset ÷ tan(angle). Right-triangle geometry, explained here. Formulas and take-off sources last checked October 20, 2026.

Multiplier, shrink and run factor

The multiplier is one divided by the sine of the bend angle. Multiply the true offset by it to get the distance between bends. The run factor is one divided by the tangent. The shrink is for each inch of true offset.

How to find the true offset

For a plain offset, the true offset is the rise. For a rolling offset, it is the square root of rise squared plus roll squared. The calculator above does it for you.

A note on rounded values

Field charts often round the multipliers to 5.8, 2.6, 2, 1.4 and 1.2. The chart here shows three decimals. For short offsets the difference is small. For long ones, use the exact value.

Questions

What are the common bender multipliers?

10 degrees: 5.76, 22.5 degrees: 2.61, 30 degrees: 2.00, 45 degrees: 1.41, 60 degrees: 1.15.

How do I find the multiplier for an odd angle?

Divide 1 by the sine of the angle. The custom angle field in the tool does this for you.
