Works after the page has loaded

Markdown to PDF offline

This tool needs a network only to load the page. After that, the conversion runs on your device. If your connection drops while you work, the preview and the PDF still work.

Preview (what the PDF will look like)

The button opens your browser print dialog. Choose Save as PDF as the destination. For a clean page, turn off "Headers and footers". The file is named after your first heading. Everything stays on your device.

Saving a PDF on a phone or tablet

iPhone and iPad (Safari)

  1. Press Download PDF.
  2. On the page preview, spread two fingers apart. The PDF opens full screen.
  3. Tap the Share button, then Save to Files.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Press Download PDF.
  2. At the top of the print screen, set Destination to Save as PDF.
  3. Tap the round PDF button and choose where to save.

Two settings for a clean PDF

Your browser opens its print window next. In that window:

Picture of the print window (not clickable)
Destination Save as PDF Options Headers and footers (off) Background graphics (optional)
  1. Set Destination to Save as PDF.
  2. Turn off Headers and footers.

What works without a network

  • Typing, pasting, and opening files.
  • The live preview, tables, task lists, footnotes, and code colors.
  • Alert blocks, emoji shortcodes, and the front matter table.
  • Insert contents, page numbers, paper size, and margins.
  • Download PDF and Save as PDF.

What needs a network first

Diagrams and formulas use extra code that loads the first time a document has one. Draw one diagram or one formula while you are online, and it stays available for that visit. Images you link from the web also need a network.

This page is not an installable app, and it does not keep itself after you close the tab. If you want to work somewhere with no signal, open the page first, and keep the tab open.

Why it needs no server

The Markdown is read by code in your browser. Your browser also draws the pages and writes the PDF with its own print feature. There is nothing to call. That is why no text is uploaded, and why there is no daily limit.

A quick test

  1. Open the page and wait for the sample to show.
  2. Turn on airplane mode.
  3. Edit the text. The preview keeps updating.
  4. Press Download PDF. The print window opens as normal.

Questions

Can I use it on a plane?

Yes, if you open the page before you lose the connection and keep the tab open. Do not refresh it while offline.

Will my draft be there next time?

Yes. The page saves your last draft in your browser. It stays on your device until you press Clear.

Is there a desktop app?

No. It is a web page. The browser does the work, which is why it stays small and private.
