Board and batten spacing for an 8 ft wall

An 8 foot wall is 96 inches wide. It is a common size for a powder room, a bathroom wall, a short hallway or the wall behind a twin bed.

On a small wall the gaps are easy to see, so a small error stands out. The table below shows every sensible batten count for 1x3 battens, so you can pick one and read the gap.

Units
Wall width

Or type it in the feet box in one go, like 12'6 1/2.

Wall height

Or type it in the feet box in one go, like 8'2.

Batten width

A 1x3 board is 2 1/2 in wide, a 1x4 is 3 1/2 in.

Center to center is the distance from the middle of one batten to the middle of the next. This tool counts battens and rails only. It does not count the wide boards or panels behind them. With no end battens, the gap at each end of the wall equals every other gap. Short offcuts from 10 and 12 foot boards work well for small trim pieces.

Gaps from 6 to 20 inches. Marks are the center of the first two battens, measured from the left edge. Boards are for an 8 ft ceiling.

What looks right on a narrow wall

On a short wall, fewer battens with wider gaps look calm. Many people stay between 8 and 12 inches here. A gap above 16 inches leaves large empty panels, and a gap below 6 inches makes a small room feel crowded.

If the wall has a door or a window near one end, check where the first and last battens land before you buy wood. A batten that touches a door casing looks like a mistake.

      Small walls need exact marks

Over 96 inches, an error of 1/8 inch in each gap adds up to about 1 inch by the last batten. Mark every center from the same end of the wall with one tape measure. Do not move the tape from batten to batten.

      Questions

How many battens fit on an 8 ft wall?

With 1x3 battens and a batten at each end, 6 to 9 battens give gaps from 9 to 16 inches. Most people choose 7 or 8.

Should an 8 ft wall have a batten at each end?

Yes, if the wall meets another wall. The end batten hides the corner joint. Turn the option off if you want a gap at each end.
